It is fairly improbable that a Group Captain of the Royal Air Force should upon retirement devote himself whole heartedly to painting. That he should become an abstract painter is less likely again: but that, working without either colleagues or public to encourage him, he should succeed in developing a powerful personal style in abstract expressionism – this surely borders upon the impossible.
